Originally established as the Svenska Aircraft Company in Sweden, Saab produced its first automobile in 1949. Inspired by its aircraft roots, Saabs cars emphasized aerodynamics and many models had a lower drag coefficient than competing models of the day. The 1980s saw Saab automobiles gain in popularity with American buyers thanks to such iconic models as the 900 Turbo. General Motors purchased Saab in 1990 and led the company into the new millennium. Unfortunately, the downturn in the economy in later part of the 2000s resulted in Saab filing bankruptcy and winding down production.
