Smart began life in 1993 as a partnership between Daimler-Benz and Swatch to build uniquely styled sub compact cars specifically designed for city living. The combination of Mercedes-Benz engineering and Swatch design in the FourTwo was immediately a hit among Europeans. With its small size, Smart created a unique safety pod crafted from reinforced steel to protect the driver. As sales climbed, Smart expanded its offering to include a convertible and sedan. In the late 2000s, the brand even ventured into the US Market, finding a niche with its unique offering for city drivers.
